North Central Association Accredited School
Shelterwood School Vision:
Shelterwood School seeks to develop students who honor Christ, pursue educational excellence, and value strong family ties. We train students to reach their highest potential in academic, physical, emotional, and spiritual growth.
Shelterwood School Mission Statement and Goals:
Shelterwood School seeks to provide a safe, caring, therapeutic, Christ-centered environment where students can best develop the academic skills and character necessary to successfully rejoin their families and communities.
Shelterwood offers a real classroom environment, with real teachers, real science experiments and real books. Most other therapeutic schools offer online classes or self-paced correspondence courses.
Our school is designed to meet academic needs of teens participating in the Shelterwood program by providing an excellent education emphasizing core curriculum and accommodating individual needs. Our academics program is one of the important elements of distinction for Shelterwood. We put a lot of emphasis on the teenagers in our care getting a solid
education while they are also dealing with various emotional issues in their life. Their education is important and shoudn’t take a second seat. Where other therapeutic schools often used self-paced computer-based or correspondence programs (something a troubled or distracted teen has difficulty doing) Shelterwood has classrooms and teachers who work with each student throughout the school day to ensure their success.
Shelterwood teachers are commit to the following:
- Teachers will communicate with one another, students, parents, and Shelterwood staff about students’ progress.
- Teachers will systematically administer student incentives based on school behavior, academic achievement, and overall attitude.
- Teachers will strive to discipline according to Biblical principles by clearly defining expectations and consequences.
- Teachers will pursue personal relationships with students in order to know them and encourage their progress.
