History & Mission
Our Story Began in 1980
To provide hope, healing and restoration for struggling teens and families.
To reach the hearts of hurting teens and share the transformational love of Jesus.
Be kind. Be honest.
Our founder, Richard Beach, was mentoring college students in life, leadership, and the teachings of Jesus through a ministry he started called Doulos Ministries (Doulos, meaning bond servant). One of his board members had a teen daughter who was struggling. Desperate for help, he asked Richard if she could come live alongside these young adults and learn from their experiences. Richard agreed. Through the mentoring, encouragement and counseling she received, his daughter’s life was transformed. Seeing his family restored, this father encouraged Richard to reach out to other families to provide help for hurting teens. These conversations laid the foundation for Shelterwood – a faith-based therapeutic boarding school for teenagers facing life’s challenges.
Today, Shelterwood has helped hundreds of families find a path to wholeness and hope in a community that inspires a deeper connection with God. Exceptional academics and professional therapy, combined with mentoring and strong relationships, has resulted in a holistic, balanced residential treatment environment for struggling teens to heal and grow. We continue to live out Richard’s legacy – to show each kid and family who comes to Shelterwood Academy the unconditional love of Jesus and the potential that lies within.
Shelterwood is the nation’s first inpatient residential treatment center to offer and facilitate the Brain Balance Program® on site. This cognitive training program strengthens and improves the areas of your teen’s brain involved with cognition, regulating mood and emotions, and overall well-being.
Shelterwood has earned the Joint Commission Seal of Approval. Our licensing and accreditation for academics and therapeutic services ensure excellence, accountability, and transparency.
