This is the philosophy behind the exceptional food and nutritious meal options prepared by Chef Matt and the Shelterwood culinary team. Eating well is part of our integrative approach to wellness that helps students feed their need for belonging and self-discovery, lead a more balanced lifestyle, and feel their best – mind, body and spirit.
Residents enjoy a variety of thoughtfully-planned meals with healthy options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our kitchen infuses locally-sourced foods with the freshest ingredients to maximize the full nutrients and flavor. Some herbs and spices are harvested by the students themselves as part of the science class in the Shelterwood greenhouse.
In addition, we cater to the special dietary needs of each resident, paying close attention to food allergies/sensitivities and offering gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options as well. Our culinary team understands how the food we eat affects the physical and mental health of our residents. Blood sugar levels, gut health, digestion and weight all have an impact on the brain which controls focus, energy, and mood. The key to optimal health is cooking with real foods and ingredients and avoiding refined sugars, artificial sweeteners and processed foods.
