Therapy

Shelterwood Academy is a Christ-centered therapeutic boarding school for teens struggling with mental, emotional and behavioral health challenges.

Treated as an Individual

The Shelterwood Team approaches each teen in our care as an individual. We don’t categorize kids by labels and diagnoses, but rather work to help them uncover their unique purpose in life and plan for the future.

Using researched-based clinical interventions and core Christian values, we help students untangle the issues they are facing in their lives and relationships. This starts by developing trust and a sense of safety in their environment. When teens at Shelterwood recognize they are loved and surrounded by a team of adults committed to their success, they can begin their journey toward wholeness and health.

Through life-on-life daily interactions, teens begin to identify new ways of thinking and operating. With this new mindset, teens can find their footing so they can stand firm in the truth of who they were created to be.

Licensed Therapists

Our licensed therapists utilize various psychotherapy modalities depending on the individual teen’s treatment needs. These include Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skill building, motivational interviewing, experiential therapy, art therapy, Safe & Sound protocol, and other therapeutic approaches.

Parental Involvement

Parental involvement is critical to the success of teens at Shelterwood. Shelterwood parents are involved in the development of the treatment plan, have access to school records through an online parent portal, participate in regular therapy sessions with their dedicated licensed therapist, and join together with the entire treatment team during quarterly treatment plan review meetings.

Healing Families

Teens enjoy a weekly call home along with regular family counseling throughout their stay. Twice annually, parents are invited to attend family retreat weekends on campus. These events are designed to deepen the family relationship through intensive family sessions, parent group meetings and seminars, and a wide variety of fun and adventurous activities.

We also work closely with parents in the development of their teen’s aftercare plan to make re-entry of their teen back home as effective as possible.

Success at Shelterwood is seeing teens self-regulating their emotions and behaviors, engaging in healthy relationships, participating in school again, and discovering their individual significance. Success is when families are healed and hope is restored. These are the end goals we commit to for each child and family we serve.
