Rebuild: Phase Two of the Shelterwood Journey
Rebuild is just that: rebuilding a solid foundation. As old, problematic and destructive behaviors are being challenged, students experience a real battle between wanting to keep the old versus considering something new. More than just learning how to temporarily modify behaviors, it is time for foundational, transformational heart change.
Students enter Rebuild after they complete their first phase, The Rebalance 120-Day Intensive Assessment™. In this second phase, your teen may experience seasons of real improvement but also seasons of regression. This can seem confusing for both of you. These ups and downs reflect a battle between old, destructive internal beliefs and new, healthy ones. At Shelterwood, we teach that our emotions and behaviors are actual reflections of what we believe internally. It takes time to get to the root of what is going on in the heart of your teen.
Rebuilding a new foundation requires creative therapies tailored to what your teen needs and will respond to best. Shelterwood’s therapists have experienced training in a wide variety of therapeutic modalities, which include Attachment, Art therapy, Play Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, EMDR, Substance Abuse and Addiction, Trauma, Eating Disorders, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and more. Our approach is not limited to talk therapy alone; Shelterwood treats the whole student, laying the foundation for a heart transformed.
During Shelterwood’s Rebuild phase, Shelterwood’s interdisciplinary treatment team works with your teen as a whole being: physical, mental and spiritual. Each critical area is addressed in the Rebuild plan. We work hard to provide interventions that make staying stuck uncomfortable for your teen. While our team does provide the atmosphere, even challenges, for healthy change, we do not believe in “breaking” your teen. Our goal, in contrast, is to help the student see the impact of choices and begin to desire a healthy, whole life.
As for you as a parent? Yes, you have a growth plan as well. Shelterwood offers parents a unique parent program that begins on the first day of enrollment. You will be given special assignments throughout the treatment process. Weekly parent calls with your teen, along with weekly sessions with the therapist coordinated with your assignments, powerfully expedite the work you do as a family to rebuild healthy relationships.
From the beginning, our treatment team works with you and your teen to prepare an aftercare plan so you will have the support you need when your teen is ready to graduate and return home. After Rebuild, students progress to the third phase of treatment: Restore. In this phase, they gain the skills they need to thrive back home.
